Renting Furniture and Appliances in Japan: Why You May Need an Emergency Contact
Moving into a home in Japan does not always mean buying everything you need. Furniture and appliance rental services let you rent items such as a bed, table, refrigerator, washing machine, or microwave for a fixed period. This can be convenient when you are staying temporarily, want to reduce upfront costs, or do not want to arrange disposal when you move out.
There is one requirement that can catch foreign residents by surprise: the application may ask for an emergency contact in Japan. If you have only recently arrived, that single field can hold up an otherwise straightforward rental.
How furniture and appliance rental works
Depending on the provider, you may be able to rent individual items or choose a package containing the basic furniture and appliances for a new home. You select a rental period, submit your details, arrange delivery, and return or extend the items at the end of the contract.
Because the provider is leaving its property in your care, the application may include identity, delivery, payment, and contact checks. The exact process varies between rental companies.
Why an emergency contact may be required
An emergency contact gives the rental company another way to reach someone if it cannot contact you directly. This can be useful when there is an urgent issue involving delivery, the rental contract, the items, or your ability to be reached.
An emergency contact is not automatically a guarantor and is not normally responsible for paying your bill simply because their name is on the form. However, you should always read the provider's wording carefully because contract terms differ.
Why overseas family may not be enough
A parent or relative overseas may be the person you trust most in a real emergency. However, a rental provider may want a contact who has a Japanese phone number, can communicate in Japanese, and is easy to reach during local business hours.
This is a practical communication requirement rather than a reflection of how close you are to the person. Someone abroad may not fit the field even when they are your most appropriate personal contact.
Can you ask a friend or coworker?
A friend or coworker in Japan may be accepted if they meet the provider's requirements. Still, asking can feel awkward, particularly when you have only recently met or when they are unsure what responsibility the role involves.
Before listing anyone, make sure they agree to it, know which company may contact them, and are prepared to answer a verification call. You can also read our guide to whether foreigners can use a friend as an emergency contact.
What happens during a verification call
The rental provider may call to confirm that the contact is reachable and aware that you have listed them. The caller may confirm basic details about the contact and your application. A contact who cannot answer in Japanese or does not recognize your name can delay the process.
For a closer look at these calls, see our guide to emergency contact verification. Although that article focuses on housing applications, the same basic idea applies: the company wants to know that the contact details are genuine and that someone will respond.
